Paper title: Astro-animation - A case study of art and science education
"For several years, we have been teaching an astro-animation class at the Maryland Institute College of Art as a collaboration between students and NASA scientists. Working in small groups, the students create a short animation based on the research of the scientist who is going to follow the project as a mentor. By creating animation on scientific research, students bring the power of their imagination to see the research of the scientist through a different lens.
Astro-animation is an undergraduate-level course jointly taught by an astrophysicist (Corbet) and an animator (Arcadias). In this paper we present the motivation behind this class, describe the details of how it is carried out, and discuss the interactions between artists and scientists. Two animation students from the class (Bella Potenziani & Declan McKenna) will share their experience about their internship at NASA GSFC
This research project started from our shared passion and curiosity about astronomy and animation. Teaching an asto-animation class is a great way to explore the potential of both disciplines."
